Light transport and global illumination

Path tracing, ReSTIR, dynamic diffuse GI and neural radiance caching connected through a working rendering framework.

Follow the light through the implementation

Light-transport research connects materials, sampling, visibility and reconstruction. A technique can change image quality while moving cost between these stages, so the implementation needs to be evaluated as a system.

Breda’s first real-time path tracer dates to May 2021. We have since worked on ReSTIR direct lighting on a multi-layer BRDF, triangle and dynamic mesh lights, dynamic diffuse global illumination, irradiance caching and neural radiance caching, alongside guiding and ReSTIR GI investigations.

From research infrastructure to publications

Darius Bouma’s Diffuse Global Illumination chapter appears in GPU Zen 3. The Samsung/Traverse mobile NRC publication adds a hardware-aware investigation of neural global illumination, followed by the SIGGRAPH 2026 mobile GI course contribution.

A few useful answers.

Does the work cover conventional and neural approaches?

Yes. Path tracing, sampling and cache-based approaches are investigated in the same rendering environment.

How far back does the implementation go?

Breda's first real-time path tracer was implemented in May 2021; subsequent work includes ReSTIR, DDGI and NRC.

Where can we read about the work?

The publication index links the mobile NRC paper and identifies the Diffuse Global Illumination chapter in GPU Zen 3.
